Security software · Updated October 2026Best Antivirus 2026: lab results, not marketing
The short answer
Bitdefender has the strongest overall lab record and the fairest renewal price — it's the default pick. Norton matches it on protection with the longest money-back window (60 days). ESET is the lightweight choice with elite protection scores. Ignore the $19.99 banners: the number that matters is the renewal price, and we publish it for every pick.
The renewal trap (read before you buy anything)
Antivirus pricing is the industry's oldest trick: a deep first-year discount that renews at 2–5× the price. McAfee's $29.99 becomes ~$99.99. TotalAV's $19 becomes $99. Every “best antivirus” list that ranks on the promo price is ranking on a fiction. Below, both numbers — because year two is when you actually live with the purchase.
The five, compared honestly
| Antivirus | First year | Renewal | Free tier | Independent labs | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitdefender Strongest overall lab record in this set. Renewal is the fairest of the big four. | $19.99/yr first year | ≈$49.99/yr | Yes — basic Windows plan; Mac is on-demand scan only | AV-TEST Apr 2026: 18/18 Top Product · AV-Comparatives 2025: Top-Rated, ATP Gold · SE Labs macOS Sep 2026: 100% | Check price |
| Norton Matches Bitdefender on labs; 60-day money-back is the longest here. No free tier at all. Prices shown are AntiVirus Plus (entry, 1 device) — Deluxe (5 devices) renews higher; confirm your tier's renewal at checkout. | $19.99–$29.99 first year | $59.99/yr | No — 7-day trial only (card required) | AV-TEST Jun 2026: 18/18 Top Product · AV-Comparatives 2025: Real-World Gold, Top-Rated · SE Labs macOS Sep 2026: 100% | Check price |
| ESET Lightest footprint, superb protection scores. Note: ESET renamed its lineup to ESET HOME Security Essential/Premium/Ultimate — confirm the tier at checkout. | $39.99/yr (1 device) | ≈$39.99/yr | No — 30-day trial, no card required | AV-TEST Jul–Aug 2026: Protection 6.0/6.0 · AV-Comparatives Feb–May 2026: 100% blocked (200/200) · SE Labs macOS Sep 2026: 100% | Check price |
| McAfee Top marks from AV-TEST but a tier below on AV-Comparatives — and the steepest renewal jump in the set. | $29.99 first year | $89.99–$109.99/yr | No — 30-day trial only | AV-TEST Apr 2026: 18/18 Top Product · AV-Comparatives 2025: Real-World Bronze, Performance Bronze | Check price |
| TotalAV Cheapest entry, decent labs — but the $19→$99 renewal step and aggressive upsells are well-documented complaints. Buy eyes open. | $19/yr first year | $99/yr | Yes — on-demand scan only, no real-time protection | AV-TEST May–Jun 2026: 17.5/18 (certified, not Top Product) · AV-Comparatives 2026: 99.0%, Advanced+ · SE Labs macOS Sep 2026: 100% | Check price |
Prices are first-year promotional rates and change frequently — verify at checkout. Lab results are cited from the labs' published reports, not our own testing. Kaspersky is deliberately excluded: US sales were banned effective July 2024 and it shut down US operations.
How to read lab results (30-second version)
- AV-TEST 18/18 “Top Product” is the gold standard — perfect protection, performance, and usability scores in a test round.
- AV-Comparatives annual awards aggregate a full year: Real-World Protection and Advanced Threat Protection medals matter most.
- SE Labs 100% means total protection accuracy in their breach-response testing.
- One great round doesn't make a product — look for repeated top results across labs and years, which is exactly what the table above shows.
First, the honest free baseline: Microsoft Defender
If you run an updated Windows 11 PC, you already have antivirus: Microsoft Defender runs in the background alongside SmartScreen and the Windows firewall, and it costs nothing. In AV-Comparatives' February–May 2026 real-world test it blocked 396 of 400 attacks (99.0%) and earned the lab's top ADVANCED+ award — a few attacks per 400 behind the paid leaders, not a different league. What paying buys is mostly extras: a VPN, parental controls, cloud backup, identity monitoring, and cover for Macs and phones that Defender doesn't touch. If you only need malware blocking on one Windows PC, Defender is the rational answer — and any paid suite you buy is competing against free, not against nothing.
Mac and Android: check what's already built in
The “Macs don't get malware” era is over, but a Mac doesn't automatically need third-party antivirus either. macOS blocks known malware through Gatekeeper, app notarisation, and XProtect before it runs. Paid protection earns its keep if you install software from outside the App Store, handle sensitive files, or share the machine. In AV-TEST's June 2026 macOS round, Bitdefender, Norton, and Avast all scored a perfect 6/6/6 — so if you do pay on a Mac, any of the three is defensible on the evidence.
On Android, Google Play Protect is built in and scored 6/6/6 in AV-TEST's July 2026 Android test. If you install apps only from Google Play and keep the phone updated, a separate mobile antivirus mostly adds scam-call blocking and a VPN — nice to have, but not malware protection you lack.
Pick by household, not by banner
- One older or slower PC: Bitdefender or ESET. Both sit at the top of independent performance tests for lowest system impact — independent reviewers consistently measure Bitdefender as the lightest client in this group.
- A house full of devices: McAfee+. Unlimited device coverage on one subscription is its whole pitch; the trade-off is the slowest scans of the group and the steepest renewal jump in this set.
- A family with kids: Norton 360 Deluxe — parental controls, 50GB cloud backup, and dark web monitoring in one dashboard. Buy it on the year-two renewal price, not the intro price.
- Zero budget: Avast One Free. It's the strongest free third-party option, running real-time protection rather than an on-demand-only scanner — but expect regular upgrade prompts; that's how free pays for itself. Get Avast One Free
- Already paying for a VPN: check whether you need a suite at all — several VPNs now bundle download and web protection. We'd still take a real antivirus over a VPN add-on, but it's a legitimate either/or for light users.
The fine print that changes the math
- Run one real-time antivirus. Ever. Two programs scanning the same files can clash and slow your machine without making you safer. Pick one; if you uninstall a third-party app, Windows falls back to Defender automatically.
- Bundled VPNs are capped. Bitdefender's bundled VPN is limited to 200MB/day per device on Total Security — enough for email on hotel Wi-Fi, not streaming. Norton's bundled VPN is uncapped. If the VPN matters to you, this decides the bundle.
- Cloud backup is Windows-only. Norton's up-to-250GB backup — the best ransomware fallback in any suite here, because a backup the malware can't reach is the whole game — doesn't run on Mac.
- Norton's infection pledge. Norton is the only suite here that refunds you if its own technicians can't remove an infection — a published policy on every tier. It's the strongest money-back promise in the category, and it sits on top of the standard 60-day refund window.
- Cancel before the renewal date. Norton bills ahead of the renewal date, not on it — if you plan to bail, do it a week early or you'll be arguing with support.
Worth paying for
- Real-time protection (the paid feature that actually matters)
- Ransomware behavior blocking, not just signature matching
- Multi-device coverage — your phone needs it too
Don't pay for
- A 'free' tier with no real-time protection
- First-year pricing without checking the renewal
- Bundled VPNs/password managers you'll never open
