- Oct 2026 — published: 9 VPNs ranked on verified audits and renewal pricing.
The short answer
NordVPN is our #1 launch pick for 2026 — it holds the deepest independent audit record of any VPN we cover — six no-logs audits — under Panama jurisdiction. Surfshark is the value pick: it pairs unlimited simultaneous devices with a $79/yr renewal — the most honest long-term pricing of the nine. Proton VPN is the choice if privacy paperwork matters more to you than raw speed

The picks, in depth
NordVPN — best for most people
Six independent no-logs audits (PwC and Deloitte, most recently published February 2026), Panama jurisdiction, and 9,500+ servers. The 2-year intro price is fair; the renewal at $139.08/yr stings, which is the one real knock.
Pros
- 6 independent no-logs audits — deepest record in the industry
- Panama jurisdiction (outside 5/9/14 Eyes)
- 9,500+ servers in 149 countries
- NordWhisper obfuscation for restrictive networks
Cons
- Renews at ~3.3× the intro monthly rate
- 10-device limit (Surfshark is unlimited)
Surfshark — best value
Two Deloitte no-logs audits plus Cure53 and SecuRing reviews, unlimited devices on one plan, and a renewal price ($79/yr) that doesn't punish loyalty. Netherlands jurisdiction is the main trade-off versus Panama or Switzerland.
Pros
- Unlimited simultaneous devices
- Renewal pricing is honest ($79/yr, no 3× jump)
- 2 Deloitte no-logs audits + Cure53 reviews
- Camouflage mode for restrictive networks
Cons
- Netherlands jurisdiction (9 Eyes)
- Smaller server network than NordVPN

Head-to-head comparisons

How to choose a VPN (60-second guide)
For streaming: pick the one that unblocks your services — blocks change constantly, which is why we re-test monthly once the lab is running. For privacy: count independent audits, not marketing claims. For price: always price the second year — the renewal bill runs up to 3.3× the intro monthly rate on the big brands (NordVPN's $139.08/yr vs its $3.49/mo intro), and it's the least honest number in VPN marketing. For China travel: only obfuscated protocols survive — and install before you board.
What a VPN won't do
VPN ads sell a privacy forcefield. Here's the honest version. A VPN hides your real IP address from the sites you visit and encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN server — that stops your ISP, and anyone on the same public Wi-Fi, from seeing which sites you visit. That's the real value, and it's worth paying for.
- It won't make you anonymous. Google, Facebook, and any site you log into still know exactly who you are.
- It won't stop phishing or malware. If you download a malicious file yourself, the VPN happily encrypts it on the way in.
- It won't make a slow connection faster. Encryption costs a little speed; the only way a VPN helps speed is against ISP throttling, and even that isn't guaranteed.
- It won't protect you from state-level surveillance. Consumer VPNs are built for ISPs and snoops, not governments.
The boring stuff protects you more than any app: two-factor authentication and unique passwords on your accounts beat a VPN subscription for most break-in scenarios. Get both, but don't confuse which does what.
Use the 30-day window as your own test lab
Every VPN we cover carries a 30-day money-back guarantee (PIA too — 30 days, per our verified data). Speed and streaming results depend onyour connection, your location, and the server you pick, so a reviewer's numbers tell you less than your own. Treat the first month as the real test:
- Day 1: run a speed test with the VPN off, then on, on the nearest server. Note both numbers — that's your personal speed cost.
- Days 1–3: try the exact streaming services and work apps you use. If one fails, try two more servers in the same country before giving up.
- Week 1: use it on public Wi-Fi at least once, and check that the kill switch is actually enabled — on at least one major provider it ships off by default.
- Week 2: install it on every device you plan to cover, so a device limit bites now instead of mid-trip.
- Before day 30: if it's not right, cancel in writing and claim the refund. Mark the date when you sign up.
How our launch scores work
Scores on this page are launch scores, not lab scores — because our hands-on lab (speed trials, leak tests, streaming unblocks) is still running. Here's exactly what goes into them:
- Independent audit records (heaviest weight). We count published, third-party no-logs audits and their dates — a claim without a receipt scores zero.
- Jurisdiction. Where the company is legally based decides who can compel its data; no-logs means more under Panama or Switzerland than under the US.
- Renewal-price honesty. We verify the price you pay after the intro deal and penalize 3× renewal jumps — it's the least honest number in VPN marketing.
- Features and device limits. Obfuscation tech, kill-switch design, port forwarding, simultaneous devices.
What's not in the scores yet: measured speeds, leak-test results, and streaming unblock counts. Those publish with the first lab report and will move scores. We say this loudly so you can hold us to it.
Who should skip each pick
Every pick has a person it's wrong for. The honest version:
- Skip NordVPN (9.2) if you have more than 10 devices, or you'll forget to cancel before the $139.08/yr renewal — the steepest jump of the nine.
- Skip Surfshark (8.9) if jurisdiction is your top concern — it's based in the Netherlands (9 Eyes), and its renewal price is shown at checkout rather than beside the deal.
- Skip Proton VPN (8.8) if streaming is your main use — its streaming-unblock reputation is weaker than NordVPN's, and you're paying $83.88/yr at renewal for it.
- Skip ExpressVPN (8.7) if you like tweaking settings or want the lowest price — it's the most expensive renewal of the nine ($99.95/yr) and deliberately simple.
- Skip PIA (8.4) if you want the strongest streaming unblocker — its reputation there is the weakest of the nine, and it's US-based (5 Eyes).
Why isn't Mullvad ranked?
Because Mullvad has no affiliate program — we'd earn $0 recommending it. Mullvad is the most trusted VPN on r/VPN and belongs in your shortlist; it's absent from our ranking because our business model can't fund recommendations that pay nothing. We mention it here so you know the omission is commercial, not editorial.
IVPN is in the same situation: an excellent privacy reputation, no affiliate program, no ranking. Astrill — popular with Dubai and China expats — has no affiliate program either; we mention it in our UAE guide without a buy button.
If a provider ever starts paying for placement here, this section is where we'll disclose it.
