The short answer

Amazon's new Vega OS (all Fire TV Sticks from late 2025 on) killed sideloading — your old APK tricks don't work. You need a VPN with a native Vega OS app: NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or Surfshark have one. On older Fire OS devices, anything works. First check which OS you have: Settings > My Fire TV > About.

Vega OS vs Fire OS: why it matters

Vega OS is Amazon's Linux-based replacement for Android-based Fire OS, debuting on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select (October 2025). Amazon has stated all future Fire TV Sticks will run Vega. The critical difference: Vega OS has no sideloading — no unknown-sources toggle, no Downloader app, no APK installs. At launch it didn't even have VPN APIs; Amazon enabled them in late November 2025, and providers have been shipping native apps since.

No native app? Two workarounds

1

Router-level VPN

Install the VPN on your router — covers the Fire TV Stick and every device on your network. One server location for everything; setup is technical but every major VPN publishes a guide.

2

Smart DNS (streaming only)

NordVPN SmartPlay and ExpressVPN MediaStreamer both support Fire TV. Unblocks streaming without encryption — fine for watching, not for privacy.

Questions, answered

What is Vega OS?

Amazon's Linux-based Fire TV operating system (not Android). It debuted on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select (Oct 2025), and Amazon says all future Fire TV Sticks will run it. Older devices (Fire TV Stick 4K Max, Cube, Fire TVs) still run Fire OS, where sideloading works normally.

Can I sideload VPN apps on Vega OS?

No. Vega OS has no 'apps from unknown sources' option — the Downloader app doesn't work and Android APKs can't install. You must use a VPN with a native Vega OS app from the Amazon Appstore, or a router-level VPN.

How do I know which OS my Fire TV runs?

Settings > My Fire TV > About. Vega OS shows a version like 'OS 1.1' with no 'Fire OS' label; Fire OS shows 'Fire OS' with a version number (6/7/8/14).

Which VPNs have a Vega OS app?

As of October 2026: NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN have native Vega OS apps. CyberGhost and PIA do not. (TechRadar reported a Proton VPN Vega app launching September 17, 2026; we haven't yet confirmed it on Proton's own pages, so we don't list it as verified.)

What if my VPN has no Vega app?

Two workarounds: install the VPN on your router (covers every device, one server location for the whole network), or use Smart DNS for streaming only — NordVPN's SmartPlay and ExpressVPN's MediaStreamer both support Fire TV. Neither encrypts like a full VPN.

Final verdict
